John Carter: “Heritage Buildings Along the Talbot Trail”

Dr. Carter has travelled the Talbot Trail for 35 years. He first became interested when he was the curator of the John R. Park Homestead and was appointed as the Essex County representative to the Talbot Trail Committee. Later as a Provincial Museum Advisor, he continued to record and document architecture along the north shore of Lake Erie.

This armchair tour is a basic introduction to the styles of 19th century Ontario vernacular architecture along the Talbot Trail. It will feature over 200 images that he has taken of built heritage along this route from Windsor to Fort Erie. Many of the buildings no longer exist. It will provide you with an opportunity to better understand the importance of preserving our built heritage of the past for appreciation in the present and in the future.

Dr. Carter is currently a Research Associate , School of History and Classics, University of Tasmania, Vice-chair of the East York Foundation, and a Board Member of the Ontario Historical Society.
